Last week, I sat down to watch this South Indian movie that almost everyone was hyping on about. I don’t usually watch a lot of Bollywood or South Indian movies, just the blockbuster ones or if the reviews are riveting enough.
Ok, so, this particular one was a Malayalam movie. To my non-Indian friends, Malayalam is one of our numerous languages, and is the prominent language of the state of Kerala. Although I was born and brought up in Bangalore (only the coolest city EVER), I have my roots in Kerala. But I haven’t shown much interest in that particular film industry, up until the recent flow of such talented actors, actresses and directors. With fresh faces, came fresh themes in movies and I’m in awe with how amazing Malayalam movies have turned into! Among these, one such movie that got me hooked was a quirky one called “Charlie”
To sum it up, “Charlie” is the story of an artist who goes in search of the ever disappearing guy, named Charlie (of course), and who almost always catches up with him but manages to lose him mere seconds before he disappears again. It’s more of a slow-paced cat and mouse chase, but throughout her journey she meets people whose lives were forever changed by the magical Charlie, who happens to be a guy that goes out of his way helping anyone and everyone he comes across, and with each step she begins to fall in love with this oddball. What’s funny is that her annoying family keeps trying to reach out to her, nagging her to get married (Typically Indian), which is why she keeps running away from home in the first place.
This movie makes you feel good, but also makes you think. I mean, is there anyone in this world who actually does things not for himself, but for the sake of a stranger’s happiness? Of course, we do our small part when we can, and we have our high profile humanitarians, but have you observed that most of their answers are usually along the lines of “It makes me happy, that’s why I do it”. Joey was right, there is no selfless act of kindness. Maybe, that’s the way the world works. Huh.
But you guys must must MUST check this movie out! There’s one available with subtitles on the net, search for it. And my, such strong characters, even the actors playing them are strong, bold and beautiful. My current girl crush is the lead heroine, and LOOK AT HER-
She is literally GOALS in every way! Her hair, her nose stud, her clothes! B-E-A-UTIFUL!
There’s another gorgeous heroine, a fellow city-girl and a badass artist-
How cute is she?! Oh, and she rides a freakin Enfield.
And, of course, our Charlie, played by one of the most handsome men of South India-
With such a gorgeous cast and a story, how could you EVER say no?
Do check it out! 🙂
